Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai

April 27, 2007

Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai is a 1954 film in which farmers seek out samurai to protect them from an impending bandit invasion.

The initial samurai that is recruited appears to be a Kurosawa regular. He was the main character in Ikiru and was a woodcutter in Rashomon. I definitely like his character in this film over the others……probably because he carries a sword…. but whatever.

He mulls over the farmers’ situation and after they offer him rice, he mulls over the probability of a successful defense against the bandit attack. After a guilt trip by the locals, he agrees to aid the farmers. What follows is this senior samurai helping the farmers in interviewing quality samurai that would be likely to aid their cause.

The interview process reveals the varying levels of skill of the samurai amassed, the least of whom who is reluctantly added in the end. His addition is more out of admiration for his energy (read: pity) than respect for his skill as a samurai, being as his “interview” revealed he was little more than a drunkard with a sword.

The movie probably isn’t for everyone I guess. I’m sure there are those out there who are lame, uninteresting, or have an aversion to all things cool. These people should stay far away from Seven Samurai, cause it is most definitely not lame, quite interesting, and possibly made of all things cool.

Clocking in about 3 1/2 hours it is quite a lot to take in, but seeing as I am probably one of the more ADHD people you will meet…..if I can watch it, no one has an excuse.

In the end all I can really say is….

JUST FREAKIN’ WATCH IT!
